Two weeks ago I went to a friends party at Baby's All Right in Williamsburg and basically danced all day long. There was one DJ that stood out among the others and his name is Tha Yell0w R. Kel.
NYC is filled with overhyped DJ's that SUCK but continue to get booked because of their looks, celebrity relationships, who they know or some other dumb excuse. My biggest pet peeve when I go out and party is listening to DJ's who don't know how to smoothly transition between songs. Especially when the next song is at a bpm completely different than the song currently playing. I'm not sure if the average party goer even pays attention to something like this, but I do. I've learned a few things from a DJ friend and it probably made my ear for hearing bullshit grow. BUT ANYWAYSSSSSS....
Tha Yell0w R. Kel, Tha Yell0w R. Kel, The Yell0w R. Kel. When I get excited about something I can't stop talking about it. His set at the party was so good! There were definitely a few Soulection remixes thrown into the mix that I recognized off top and just went wild. But of course what caught my ear, and kept me from taking a bathroom break was his transitions. Wish I could get all DJ techy with my wording but I'm just going to keep it simple. He was amazing! I wrote down a couple songs that he played but of course they magically disappeared off my phone. I do remeber hearing "Pa Mala" by Sango though, and I love that song. Like the corny person I am, I had to introduce myself to him, and let him know that he was tight. The fact that his DJ name is Tha Yell0w R. Kel is pretty awesome too.
Long story short, perfect your craft and for the sake of my ears work on them transitions. I know I am not the only one that feels this way!
